A plug adapter changes the connection to the wall socket. It does not, by itself, change the supply voltage. Whether a hair dryer can be used abroad depends on the exact dryer’s voltage rating and instructions, including any selector switch and adapter restrictions.

“Travel dryer” and “dual voltage” are not enough information to choose a converter. A manufacturer’s appliance-specific prohibition takes priority over generic travel advice.

Three different electrical arrangements

Documented example What the manufacturer describes What to check before packing
Conair 124N Manual 125/250 selector; restrictions on settings at higher voltage Exact switch instructions and a suitable plug connection; manual prohibits a voltage converter
Dyson Supersonic Travel Automatic voltage adaptation on this specific Travel model Rating plate, destination supply and the stated adapter requirements
Regional Dyson Supersonic Iron/Red support example Use within the voltage range of the purchase region Do not transfer the Travel model’s capability to this regional model

These are documentation examples, not a performance ranking. Conair’s general adapter explanation is useful for the terminology, but the exact appliance manual determines the permitted arrangement.

A selector is not automatic voltage adaptation

The Conair 124N manual describes different selector positions and operating restrictions for the higher-voltage range. It also explicitly says not to use the dryer with a voltage converter.

That combination matters: buying a dual-voltage dryer does not remove the need to read its instructions, and buying a converter is not a way to ignore them. Complete any required setup exactly as the manual directs before connecting the appliance. This article does not replace that model-specific procedure.

Keep the exact Dyson model name

Dyson’s Supersonic Travel product page describes automatic adaptation across 100-240V and specifies an adapter rated for 1300W across the stated range. Check the physical unit’s rating and current manual rather than borrowing an adapter solely because the plug fits.

Dyson’s regional Supersonic support example instead limits use to the same supply-voltage range as the purchase region. The shared Supersonic name does not establish shared electrical capability.

Build a four-item travel check

Record the complete model number, input-voltage range, any selector instructions and the manufacturer’s adapter or converter statement. Compare all four with the destination supply. If a requirement is unclear, ask the manufacturer before travel or use an appliance supplied for that location.

A connector’s shape, a folding handle or a low advertised price cannot settle that compatibility question. Nor does a converter’s headline wattage establish that it is suitable for every electronic dryer.

This guide compares published manufacturer instructions, checked October 12, 2026. No electrical or drying-performance tests were performed. We have not certified a universal adapter combination; the purpose is to help you identify the documented conditions for your exact appliance.
