Identify the dryer and its filter assembly before deciding whether anything can be washed. Dyson publishes dry-only instructions for one Supersonic mesh arrangement and washing instructions for specified removable professional filter units. They refer to different parts and models.
The practical mistake is copying the washing step while dropping the component name. A removable unit being washable does not mean the machine itself, or its exposed mesh, should be rinsed.
Three instructions that should stay separate
| Manufacturer reference | Cleaning distinction | Indicator or timing in that reference |
|---|---|---|
| Supersonic support page | Mesh cleaned with a soft dry toothbrush or C-brush; no water or chemicals | Monthly, or when the three LEDs flash continuously |
| Professional filter 965001-01 | Machine mesh wiped dry; identified removable filter unit can be soaked, separated, rinsed and completely dried | At least monthly or when its white LEDs alert |
| Professional HD18/Supersonic r manual | Two removable filter parts have their own wash instructions | Yellow flashing light or reduced airflow prompts cleaning; white light identifies absent or incorrectly fitted filter |

These are not a universal list of every Supersonic revision. The named support page and actual assembly determine which row applies.
Start with identification, then unplug
Use your machine’s exact identity and the manufacturer’s matching support page. Check whether the instruction refers to the machine mesh, a one-part removable filter or a two-part filter unit. Dyson’s professional support explicitly notes that a one-part filter uses a different process.
All three references require disconnecting the machine from electricity and allowing it to cool before cleaning. Keep that first step attached to the procedure rather than starting at the point where a filter slides off the cord.
If the assembly does not match the illustrated or described parts, pause at identification. A similar-looking cover is insufficient evidence of the correct cleaning method.
Where the apparent contradiction disappears
For the Supersonic assembly described on the general support page, the instruction is dry brushing with no chemicals or water on the mesh.
For the specified professional filter, Dyson first tells you to wipe the machine mesh with a dry lint-free cloth. The separate removable unit is the part it permits to soak in warm soapy water for at least 30 minutes. Its subsequent separation, rinse and complete drying steps belong to that unit. The machine remains outside the washing process.
The HD18 manual gives another specified sequence for two removable parts. Do not merge it with the older support instructions into a new homemade procedure, or assume the same LED colors mean the same thing on every dryer.
Refit the correct parts before use
Complete the matching instructions, including any drying and locking requirements, before reconnecting the dryer. A washed component is not ready merely because its outside looks clean. Use the manufacturer’s definition of completion for that assembly.
If the filter is damaged, cannot be fitted as documented or the specified error remains, use manufacturer support. A filter-cleaning guide cannot establish the cause of every shutdown or loss of airflow, and it does not authorize opening the dryer.
Method and limits
We compared Dyson’s component-specific support and manual text on October 11, 2026. We did not clean or electrically test a dryer. The useful asset is the assembly matrix: it explains why dry-only and washable instructions can both be correct without applying them to the same component. No improved-airflow measurement, repair success or universal cleaning interval is claimed.
